Curtains often set the tone of the room and before basing your decision totally on design, consider that there are many types of drapery fabric to choose from, each having its pros and cons. Cotton, for example, is a strong, breathable fabric that is easy to clean and comes in a variety of colors and designs. Cotton, however, is not very durable and tends to wrinkle easily.

Polyester is an affordable choice for a strong, easy to clean fabric that’s also crease-resistant and won’t fade in the sun. Silk is a beautiful and durable drapery fabric, though it is more expensive and can be prone to fading and water spots.

Opacity is another thing to consider when choosing drapery fabric. Do you want heavy curtains that will keep the sunlight out of your bedroom? Or are you looking for airy fabric that will allow light to pass through? Light can also be a factor when choosing a color for your fabric. Consider that darker colors will let less light through and vice versa. Though you may find a pattern that you like, take into account the room and light before making a decision.

How many windows, where they are located, and how large they are should also be taken into account. If one small window is the only source of light in a room, you may not want to use a heavy drape. A bathroom, however, calls for privacy and thus a certain degree of coverage.
