When choosing an upholstery fabric, there’s more to consider than just color. It’s also important to take into account the type of fabric you will need. For example, if you are upholstering a couch, will your dog or cat be joining you on it? If so, you would probably want to consider a more durable upholstery fabric than you might otherwise. Don’t select a delicate silk or textured fabric that will easily tarnish. Will this newly upholstered piece be sitting near a window? In this case, you may want to choose a fade resistant fabric.
The style of fabric you choose should mirror not only your preferences, but also the piece that is being upholstered. Consider the room where the piece will be, is it a more formal room or a casual room? The upholstery fabric you select should compliment the décor that surrounds it for a cohesive look and feel. The design of the fabric should not overwhelm the piece. A bigger, bolder pattern belongs in a larger, more spacious room while a subtle pattern works best in a smaller room.
Once the type and style of upholstery fabric has been decided, then comes the big decision…color. It’s best to choose a color you feel comfortable with as opposed to choosing ‘trendy’ or popular colors that may go out of style.
